About WEL Networks

With around 270 employees, owned by and working for the community, WEL Networks has been serving the Waikato for 100 years, distributing power from the national grid, connecting over 160,000 people to electricity services.

Based in Hamilton, we play an essential role in the region's economic and social development by identifying and investing in new technologies that will modernise our network and future-proof our region. We’re excited to be broadening our horizons as we diversify from a traditional lines company into a multi-utility.

As the world is going through a period of significant change and adjusting to a new normal, so too is WEL Networks. With the energy landscape changing at pace, through the acceleration of Electrification, Solar, Batteries, and EVs driving changing customer expectations, we are focussing now more than ever on unlocking our energy potential and realising our vision: to create an innovative energy future.

We are looking for skilled, innovative and enthusiastic individuals to join our team in supporting the company through this exciting new chapter and into the future.

About the role

Reporting to the Distribution Automation Manager, as a SCADA/NMS Engineer you will work in a team that ensures that our SCADA/NMS systems support current and future Control Centre performance requirements.

This is a fascinating area of engineering working in a dynamic environment where you will be involved in working on new technology, cyber security and other challenging projects.

For the right person, there is the potential for this role to be a “Senior” SCADA/NMS Engineer, so we welcome applications from candidates of all experience levels.

  • Maintaining and updating the NMS database and diagrams.
  • Ensuring the functionality, reliability and performance of our Network Management System (NMS).
  • Supporting new system developments and user requirements.
  • Training staff to develop competence in using the NMS.
  • Maintaining and delivering SCADA data.

Skills and experience

  • A tertiary level qualification in power engineering or computing – preferably a BEng or BSc
  • Experience working with SCADA, IT and Communication systems
  • Proven technical experience, with an emphasis on network control and technology – experience in an Electricity Distribution environment would be fantastic
  • To be an innovator, able to think outside the square and solve the difficult problems!

Staff Benefits

At WEL, we look after our people – with medical, life and income protection insurance, a variety of flexible working options, the safest equipment and plenty of upskilling opportunities. We will also help you with relocation expenses when moving into the Waikato.
