Frank Lomas: A Journey of Growth and Passion in the Power Industry

Fresh out of Hamilton Boys’ High School, Frank Lomas embarked on a journey that would shape his future in the power industry. At just 17, he seized the opportunity to become a trainee electrical fitter at WEL Networks, after completing a Gateway programme, which allowed him to gain hands-on experience while still in school.
Frank's dedication and hard work paid off as he completed a four-year apprenticeship and spent three years as a fully-fledged electrical fitter. His passion for the technical aspects of the job led him to pursue further growth, and he is now training to become a Protection Technician.
Embracing Challenges and Learning
Currently studying towards a Level 5 Power Technician qualification, Frank finds the coursework challenging but rewarding. His love for electronics and physics, nurtured during his school years, aligns perfectly with his career path. Encouraged by his parents, both of whom worked in the power industry, Frank recognized the value of a career in this under-resourced field.
“Every day is different, and every day comes with a new challenge,” he says.
Supportive Environment
Frank attributes much of his success to the supportive environment at WEL Networks. He values the knowledge-sharing culture, where experienced colleagues are always willing to help and mentor him. This collaborative atmosphere not only enhances his learning but also keeps him engaged and motivated.
“My team are very supportive . . . we all share information and learn off each other. We all want everybody to learn, that’s what keeps us safe at the end of the day,” he says.
Advice for Aspiring Technicians
For those considering a similar path, Frank emphasizes the benefits of starting a career straight out of high school. He highlights the advantage of earning while learning, gaining valuable qualifications without the burden of student loans. Frank's journey is a testament to the fact that university is not the only route to a successful and fulfilling career.
“I've earned money since I was 17 years old. For me, a traineeship was a no-brainer. University isn’t for everyone, and I think it’s important for people to know that there are other options out there,” he says.
Looking Ahead
With seven years in the industry, Frank still feels like there is so much more to learn. He is excited about the future and aims to absorb as much knowledge as possible during his two-year traineeship. His goal is to become a competent and skilled Protection Technician, ready to tackle the challenges of this dynamic field.
“The more I’m able to learn and the more experience I gain, the more I’ll be able to progress my career. It’s a limitless industry,” he says.
Frank Lomas's story is an inspiring example of how passion, dedication, and a supportive environment can lead to a rewarding career. His journey from a high school student to a trainee Protection Technician showcases the endless possibilities for growth and success in the power industry.
